Networking Tips
When locals tell you they're connected - LISTEN! Community connections run as deep as the Willamette River and Boly:Welch is right up there on top of the heap when it comes to who-knows-who.
Networking Basics
If you're just starting out or looking to brush up on your skills then consider following these basics to improve your odds when networking:
- Network with a goal in mind
- Access and gain exposure to the right people
- Listen first
- Focus on the quality of interactions, not just quantity
- Spend at least as much time giving as asking
- Be time sensitive
- Be brave
- Make it easy for someone to help you
- Do your homework
- Have an elevator pitch
- Stay connected
- Follow up with a thank you contact
Have a Networking Plan
Just as important as attending networking events is doing your homework and creating a plan. Keep these questions in mind as you're preparing:
- Who will be at the event?
- Who do you want to talk to?
- What can you do to prepare?
- What are your networking goals?
- What will you come back with?
Your Public Image
Your public image is everything when searching for a job. Remember that every aspect of your life shapes it. Keep these forms of "public" communication in mind as you present yourself to potential employers:
- Mobile phone ringtones
- Voicemail greetings
- How you answer your phone
- E-mail signatures
- Social networking profiles
The Elevator Pitch
Create a 15 second sound byte that captures the essence of "you". Make it believable and compelling. You want people to pass along your message!
- Can the people closest to you describe what you do for a living in two minutes?
- Can you describe what you want to do clearly in two minutes?
- Can you describe what you are looking for in two minutes?
Closing Out a Job Search
Follow-up with your network after landing a new job! It's important to develop your connections into long lasting business relationships.
- When you land a new job make sure to follow up with your network and give them your updated contact information.
- Keep the network that you built alive - you never know when you can assist someone else or when you will need to begin your job anew.
- Once you reach your destination don't forget how you got there.
