Job Resources   :   Resume Tips   :   Interview Tips   :   Business Casual   :   Networking

When locals tell you they're connected - LISTEN!  Community connections run as deep as the Willamette and Boly:Welch is right up there on top of the heap when it comes to who-knows-who.

Networking Basics

If you're just starting out or looking to brush up on your skills then consider following these basics to improve your odds when networking:

  • Network with a goal in mind
  • Access and gain exposure to the right people
  • Listen first
  • Focus on the quality of interactions, not just quantity
  • Spend at least as much time giving as asking
  • Be time sensitive
  • Be brave
  • Make it easy for someone to help you
  • Do your homework
  • Have an elevator pitch
  • Stay connected
  • Follow up / say thank you

Have a Networking Plan

Just as important as attending networking events is doing your homework and creating a plan. Keep these questions in mind as you're preparing:

  • Who will be at the event?
  • Who do you want to talk to?
  • What can you do to prepare?
  • What are your networking goals?
  • What will you come back with?

Your Public Image

Your public image is everything is when searching for a job.  Remember that every aspect of your life shapes it.  Keep these forms of "public" communication in mind as you present yourself to potential employers:

  • Mobile phone ringtones
  • Voicemail greetings
  • How you answer your phone
  • E-mail signatures
  • Social networking profiles

The Elevator Pitch

One of the most important pieces to be prepared with before attending a networking event is the elevator pitch.  Ask yourself these questions and outline clear answers in advance:

  • Can the people closest to you describe what you do for a living in 2 minutes?
  • Can you describe what you want to do clearly in 2 minutes?
  • Can you describe what you are looking for in 2 minutes?

Closing Out a Job Search

Following up with your network when landing a new job is a nice touch.  It's important to cultivate your connections into long lasting business relationships.

  • When you land a new job make sure to follow up with your network and give them your updated contact information
  • Keep the network that you built alive - you never know when you can assist someone else or when you will need to begin your job search again
  • Once you reach your destination don't forget how you got there
